As part of the Adur Festival, last Saturday the Sussex Academy of Music (SAM) put on a day filled with music, dance and culture. Featuring the stars of STOMP!, Chicago and Riverdance, the SAM open day showcased talent from friends, tutors and students of the local community.
Filling the live room with sound were rock band Plains (pictured), legendary guitarist Paco Pascual, and vocal and guitar students from SAM. Not only were there performances, but guests were also able to sample some of SAM’s popular workshops including Rockschool and Blues Harmonica. Stars of the West End even took to the stage to encourage the visitors to try out percussive music and dance for themselves!
Upstairs, in the 6 colourful tuition rooms, guests had sample taster sessions in many different instruments, from piano and drums to beatboxing and guitar. They also watched some of our talented tutors perform in our live room. Lucy Osborne, guitar teacher at SAM, performed an amazing set of songs, demonstrating acoustic tapping on the guitar. SAM students and tutors chatted to people throughout the event about what it’s like to be part of such a vibrant place to learn.
What was very exciting on the day was the opportunity for everyone to try out the 6 brand new digital pianos given to SAM by Roland. Children and adults alike tested out the split piano and teaching modes and we heard some fantastic songs from Nivedita Ballesteros, our talented Piano tutor.
Guests had a peek inside the brand new Riverside Recording Studio, and many signed up for their FREE first lesson in various instruments! SAM gave away goody bags containing CDs, plectrums, stickers, badges and musical magazines, which went down very well with our younger visitors!
The SAM team, students and tutors had a fantastic day, and hope everyone who came down enjoyed it as much as we did. Here's to the next one!
