On Saturday 5th June, SAM worked together with International Neighbours to help the pupils from St Nicholas and St Mary’s Primary School perform their poetic and musical interpretation of Rivers, at the annual International Festival Day. The event was part of the Adur Festival, and attracted people from all over the Adur district.
The children had recorded their poetic sounds at SAM, after studying the topic Rivers at school. They had learned about Rivers in each of their lessons, creating colourful artwork, a PowerPoint display in their I.C.T class and finally looking at the sounds the rivers make through exploring poetry and music.
Their performance included some of their artwork, a dance performance, and poetry readings.
The International Neighbours event was a very successful day, attracting people from many different cultural backgrounds to celebrate their heritage and traditions and share them with the community, encouraging the residents of the Adur area to develop positive relationships with one another, no matter what race or religion.
The event was incredibly vibrant, showcasing dance, music, poetry and art from the many different cultures that live in the area. There were different cultural foods to sample, from countries such as India, China, and parts of Africa. Lucy Osborn, who teaches guitar at SAM, performed an amazing rendition of Toto’s hit song Africa, which she performed using syncopated rhythm guitar taps! Attendees also experienced Turkish dancing, Caribbean poetry, and looked around some fabulous arts and crafts stalls.
SAM very much enjoyed being part of such an enjoyable day, and looks forward to working with International Neighbours and St Nicolas and St Mary’s Primary School again.
